Financial education

A commitment that the Intesa Sanpaolo Group feels is particularly close to its area of expertise is the dissemination of knowledge of economic/financial issues, to make people more aware of their financial choices, with a particular attention on the new generations. There are many initiatives that are realized by making available, without commercial purposes, our experience and advice on the issues of savings management and family budget.

A special focus on young people

Image of a young student

The Intesa Sanpaolo Group is actively involved in initiatives to develop and spread financial and economic knowledge, in particular to young people, ever more in need to make relevant choices for their welfare (pensions, investments, savings).
The attention that the world of finance addresses to this issue has led the Italian Banking Association to set up the "Foundation for Financial Education and Saving" (Fondazione per l'Educazione Finanziaria e al Risparmio).

Museo del Risparmio (Saving Museum)

The Savings Museum is a multi-media, interactive museum set up in 2012 by Intesa Sanpaolo. Dedicated to families, adults and children, the museum explains the concepts of saving and investing with a clear, simple language, to help improve financial literacy. In 2013 it founded the International Federation of Finance Museums (IFFM) in collaboration with the Museum of Global Finance in Beijing, the Museum of American Finance in New York and the Global Financial Literacy Excellence Center in Washington, and became co-chair in 2022.

Founded in 2012 in Turin, thanks to the financial support of the Intesa Sanpaolo Group, of which it is part, it was a pioneer in the spread of financial education in Italy, so much so that it was the first museum in the world dedicated to this topic. Its mission is to help people consciously manage their personal finances and consequently improve their overall well-being level, counteracting situations of poor financial literacy that often contribute to a much wider phenomenon of social exclusion. During 2024, the Museum's educational initiatives reached 100,548 users.

The actions developed by the Savings Museum are based on scientific surveys aimed at exploring the needs in terms of financial literacy of the different population targets. Every year the Savings Museum develops surveys in collaboration with public and private research centres, the results of which guide the design and provision methods of the training activities. The latest survey, which was released in November 2024, explores how optimism (or hope), happiness, and planning skills influence peace of mind when dealing with personal money issues.

In 2024, new modular programmes were introduced, such as EduFin&Fun for the youngest (6-14 years) and the programme for transversal skills and career guidance (PCTO - percorso per le competenti transversali e per l’orientamento professionale) for young people (15-18 years), to promote the understanding of economic concepts and prepare the new generations for future financial decision-making processes. 116 awareness-raising events were also organised on topics such as online safety, investing in human capital and the connections between finance and other disciplines.

Projects and events for schools developed by the Saving Museum

The Savings Museum promotes social inclusion through the dissemination of financial skills and educational inclusion through a rich programme of educational initiatives, designed for both children and adults, who can join either on an individual basis or in groups through schools or non-profit sector associations.

  • “EduFin&Fun for primary and secondary schools”, consisting of three meetings during which to explore the history and functions of money, elements of personal budget management and safe use of the Internet and the first online purchases
  • “Percorso per le Competenze Trasversali e l’Orientamento del Risparmio (Path for Transversal Skills and Savings Orientation)” (PCTO), modules reserved for secondary schools, and consisting of a total of six basic financial education modules with a total duration of 60 hours that classes can choose and combine based on specific needs. In addition to the basic modules, special PCTO courses were made available, including ad hoc versions for Fashion and Design Schools and Sports-focused High Schools. In addition, digital educational content was made available to teachers on the Savings Museum website, such as educational video games
  • S.A.V.E. Virtual Tour: multimedia path dedicated to education on savings and sustainability, enriched in 2022 with the SAVE Ambassador initiative that allows students to develop active research projects on how to make their cities more sustainable from a social and environmental point of view
  • School for Life: project against dropping out from school, targeting lower secondary school pupils, developed by Intesa Sanpaolo and ELIS Consortium and with the contribution of the Museo del Risparmio, through 121 training sessions for students in central and southern Italy
  • ECO-Quiz: over 2,000 students took part in online lessons and a national quiz competition on savings and money themes on the occasion of the Turin Festival of Economics;
  • “Il Mio posto nel Mondo” (My Place in the World): online festival dedicated to investing in human capital, organised in collaboration with the Museo Egizio, Lavazza Museum and Museo della Chimica
  • Sky is no Limit: an event dedicated to middle school pupils to promote greater awareness on the opportunities and challenges in the world of work.

In addition to guided tours and structured itineraries, the Savings Museum is involved in various projects aimed at the school world through storytelling based on edutainment, contaminations and play. The following main actions were implemented:

  • educational workshops, such as the ECO-quiz initiative during the International Economics Festival in Turin, where 1,650 secondary school students challenged one another in an exciting eduquiz on the topics of the correct evaluation of economic information
  • dedicated insight events, including: various workshops on the occasion of the Safer Internet Day and Cybersecurity Month for over 12 thousand students
  • “Cosa farò da grande (What will I do when I grow up)” and “Il mio posto nel mondo (My place in the world)” to raise awareness among younger kids on the importance of investing in their future, which involved over 8 thousand students from lower and upper secondary schools.

A total of approximately 8,550 children and young people participated in in-person activities and 80,184 were involved in remote learning activities, always accompanied by a tutor, for a total of over 1,070 hours of training provided.

Furthermore, in collaboration with the “Financial Literacy International Network” (FLITIN), a network of Financial Education Ambassadors belonging to the 11 international subsidiary banks of the Intesa Sanpaolo Group promoted by the Museum, educational workshops were organised that involved over 6,250 students with the aim of raising awareness of basic financial culture using a playful and engaging method.

Other initiatives of the Saving Museum

Since 2017, the Savings Museum has set itself the goal of designing pilot initiatives specifically aimed at segments of the population which, for various reasons, can be considered socially vulnerable, such as women, migrants, prisoners, students from disadvantaged backgrounds, and people with mild cognitive disabilities. The main activities to support the development of financial education among the most socially vulnerable categories included:

  • “Welcom-ed”: dedicated to migrants and foreign students from the Provincial Centres for Adult Education (CPIA) and to the youngest people of the Communities to raise their awareness of basic financial terminology, simple budgeting and planning techniques and the operation of the most widespread financial instruments; −
  • “Prometti di prenderti cura di te (Promise to take care of yourself)”: designed to provide women victims of violence with the basic economic knowledge and skills needed to achieve personal emancipation and economic independence;
  • “LEI” and “Logos”: a programme for female inmates at the end of their sentence and ex-inmates designed to enhance their opportunities in the job market in the perspective of leaving prison and to prevent the phenomenon of recidivism.

Additional financial education activities and collaborations were conducted for individuals with cognitive or physical disabi lities and for people with drug or gambling addictions. Overall, in 2024, the training activities of the Savings Museum aimed at vulnerable people reached approximately 730 individuals.

At the same time, the outreach activity for the adult audience continued with a schedule of 56 digital and blended events which reached about 3,735 people and 2,900 on-demand views during the period considered. Among the new projects, it is worth noting the start of a collaboration between the Savings Museum and the Department for Youth Policies and the Universal Civil Service, with the aim of spreading financial education among young people between the ages of 18 and 35, holders of the Carta Giovani. Within the framework of the collaboration, the Savings Museum provided two cycles of the online training course “Riscalda i muscoli (Warm up your muscles)” for a total of 20 dates and 4,591 participants. In terms of accessibility, the Savings Museum worked to prepare content and guided tours accessible to users with hearing and visual disabilities, in collaboration with Ente Nazionale Sordi (“Italian National Agency for the Deaf”) and Unione Italiana Cechi (''Italian Union for the Visually-impaired).

The actions have mainly national geographical coverage. Some specific educational initiatives (“Money Master Challenge”; “SAVE Ambassador”; “Cybersecurity Labs") are also proposed in other European and non-European countries through the Financial Literacy International Network (FLITIN). The initiatives are aimed at the entire community, but modulated according to the specific needs of the different groups of beneficiaries: children, young people, adults, schools, families, socially vulnerable groups (for example, migrants, women victims of violence, prisoners and ex-prisoners, young people at risk of dropping out of school, people with cognitive disabilities, etc.). The actions are planned on an annual basis and following the calendar of the reference school year.

Other projects of financial education

Young Factor Project

The partnership with the Osservatorio Permanente Giovani-Editori for the Young Factor project continued in 2024, with the aim of supporting critical reading and economic and financial literacy among young people.

The initiative continued with the project in schools, involving almost 700,000 students.

Developed as part of the Il Quotidiano in Classe initiative, the project has evolved with new content and meetings in Italian schools, seeking to facilitate the spread of an economic and financial culture among young people, providing them with useful cognitive support to make informed choices about their future and foster the formation of responsible citizens. By reading several newspapers in comparison, it aims to help young people develop that critical spirit that is essential to being free citizens tomorrow - the project intends to promote the spread of economic and financial culture among young people, provide useful knowledge supports to make informed choices for their future, and foster the formation of responsible citizens. Teachers and classes participating in the project include in their educational program an in-depth study of the issues underlying economics, finance and the rules that govern financial and banking activities. The educational work draws inspiration from current issues (the economic crisis, the performance of financial markets, etc.) and allows for an in-depth study of the various topics, bringing them back to the daily reality of the kids.

Financial education for consumer associations and the population

Image of people

As part of relations with Consumer Associations, the "Mettere in comune competenze" project is active. It is born from the desire to transfer professional knowledge, in order to increase, on the one hand, the capacity for mutual collaboration and, on the other , the financial education of national and regional managers of consumer organizations, who are then able to actively support the citizens who turn to them in economic matters.

Periodically and upon request, we also hold webinars and courses in presence in the area together with the Associations, generally aimed at the most fragile segments of the population, on financial, banking and insurance and extremely current topics, such as over-indebtedness, fraud and scams.

The project, carried out in collaboration with the Impact Learning Structure, respects the initial division into four sectors which have evolved and adapted to new situations and needs.

"Formiamo l’Italia dei Consumatori"

"Formiamo l’Italia dei Consumatori", "Let's train Italy's consumers", a series of seminars on economic and financial topics. Intesa Sanpaolo specialists and Group managers have "guided" in recent years the central executives of the Associations in the banking economic world, from the ABC of markets and financial instruments to the fundamentals of risk and return, from managed savings to derivatives and the main analysis methodologies, to conclude with an in-depth analysis of the regulatory framework and mechanisms that led to the Subprime crisis, which evolved into the sovereign debt crisis.
After the first cycle of seminars, refresher sessions followed with insights into the international macro-economic scenario and the banking system, the insurance and social security sector, investment products, the world of online banking services, the digital economy, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence.

"Formiamo la banca dei consumatori"

"Formiamo la banca dei consumatori" (Let’s train the consumers’ bank) aimed at promoting a training programme for all Intesa Sanpaolo employees in Italy with the intention to develop a greater knowledge of consumer culture and improving customer relations skills. The project involves the different training channels:
Classrooms
For the first time, on an experimental basis, some time slots, handled independently by a representative of one of the Associations that took part in the project, were included in the training courses for new recruits and for new managers. During the lessons the topics of consumer culture were covered and a lot of space was dedicated to debate and exchange of views on the protection of the client / consumer rights.
E-learning
Video-lessons held by Consumer Associations’ representatives on the guarantees of goods and services, with particular attention to rights and regulations were recorded. The video-lessons addressed, among others, the issues of out-of-court settlement, commercial practices and the Consumer Code.
Intranet
Web pages dedicated to the consumer culture were created and made accessible by all Bank staff. Among the various sections, as well as a brief history of consumerism, colleagues can find news from the Associations, the rules of the out-of-court settlement in Intesa Sanpaolo, as well as links to the sites of all the Associations that are part of the National Council of Consumers and Users at the Ministry of Businesses and Made in Italy.

Video. Clips were also created for Group employees with in-depth analysis of non-banking issues illustrated by delegates of consumer associations.

"Formiamo le regioni dei consumatori"

"Formiamo le regioni dei consumatori" (Let us train the consumers’ regions) aimed at increasing consumers’ banking and financial knowledge through the training of tutors and Associations managers at local level, thanks to the cooperation of the Intesa Sanpaolo’s experts. In the past a region of Italy was identified in which to organize a series of seminars on banking, financial and insurance issues. In 2021-2023, 9 webinars has been realized that have involved all italian regions. Since 2024, in addition to in-depth webinars, there have been meetings for macro-regions (North, Center and South of the country).

Ecco come ti vediamo noi consumatori"

Thanks to the session "This is how we consumers see you", a fruitful listening was established by the top managers of the Intesa Sanpaolo Group to the requests brought forward by the Managers of the Associations, which gave rise to many initiatives, such as: the creation of an Agreement Framework for regulating joint activities, previewing products and services and joint training of conciliators.
